Four of Cups

A young man sits cross-armed under a tree, eyes down, before three cups standing in the grass. From a small cloud, a hand offers him a fourth cup he does not appear to see.

★ Upright

The Four of Cups is emotional flatness in the middle of plenty — apathy, boredom, the shrug that follows too much of the same. Upright, it acknowledges the funk but points firmly at the offered cup: an opportunity is extending itself right now that your mood has rendered invisible. Look up.

♺ Reversed

Reversed, the trance breaks. Motivation returns, the offered cup finally registers, and withdrawal gives way to engagement. It can also warn that the window on that quietly offered chance is beginning to close — accept it or release it, but stop pretending it isn't there.
